Building 22 of RMIT was originally built for Singer Sewing Machine Company in 1912 and now features prominently in students’ orientation as the Universities Info Centre.

The classic heritage building underwent refurbishment and required the century-old brick facade to be strengthened to support a new glass rooftop atrium.

Our job was to provide the strengthening works over two levels which required extremely detailed construction methodology due to the fragility of the structure, the limited access and the fact the University had to remain open and fully operational while being situated on some of Melbournes busiest streets.

Timber floors that acted as structural bracing were removed, while large heavy beams and fabricated parts were craned in through tight spaces and windows across voids.  Due to restrictions of access, FABCON employed the largest material hoist in the world to lift the individual steel sections weighing more than 500 kilograms.

Even with all the restraints, the installation went seamlessly and on time due to the extensive input of FABCON’s project management team and problem-solving with GHD on-site that resolved multiple connection issues.
