The La Mamma Theatre in Carlton has been home to Independent Theatre for the last 50 years. It is known for its vibrant history in cultivating the creative arts and nurturing actors that have since become some of Australia’s stars for television and film.

However, its history nearly came to an end in 2018 when a fire devastated the building, destroying much of the internal structure. But it was not to be the end, through charitable donations from the community, the theatre was able to be rebuilt using some of the existing walls and building materials.

Fabcon worked with the various project stakeholders to provide and strengthen the structural integrity of the rebuild that equipped the theatre with new rehearsal space, house amenities and theatre facilities.

In addition, an external balcony and architectural stairs were fabricated and installed, meeting its original heritage design that included Accoya timber for the treads and handrails.

The community project was successfully completed in late 2021 and reopened to resume its vital role in theatre creation in the community for decades to come.
